A Parish of Faith, Hope, and Charity
As Parishioners of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, we are a culturally diverse Catholic Community united in the grace of God, under the mantle of Mother Mary, called to dedicate our lives to Christ. As Cathedral, we are a beacon of tradition and grandeur, hospitality, and sacred liturgy. We are missioned to serve God in our parish, our diocese, and in the broader community.
Immaculate Conception is the title of the Blessed Virgin as sinless from the first moment of her existence. In the words of Pope Pius IX's solemn definition, made in 1854, "the most holy Virgin Mary was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of almighty God in view of the merits of Jesus Christ the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin". Her freedom from sin was an unmerited gift of God of special grace, and an exception to the law, or privilege, which no other created personal ever received. Solemn celebration of this special dignity is noted each December 8 in a special Mass on that Holy Day of obligation for all Catholics. The Blessed Virgin Mary, under the title of Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States, our Diocese and this Cathedral.
